The Process: One of my favorite games for the PS2 was Odin Sphere. Odin Sphere was re-released in 2016, so I felt like it was the perfect time to put together a dream costume of mine - Gwendolyn, the Valkyrie princess! Even though I've been inspired by some great builds of her I've never seen anyone successfully open and close her hip-mounted wings. They are normal bird wings, but mounted at the hips. The shoulders are also exposed, so I didn’t have the option of building a back-mounted harness. Gravity is against you in two directions, and I realized I was going to have to figure out how to open the wings both up and out. I ended up sewing a harness to a corset mimicking the design of a climbing harness, and framing the wings in aluminum bars. The wings are powered by a paintball CO2 tank hidden under the back of the skirt, with tubing fed to pistons for power. There are 4 pistons total, with 2 pushing up at the hips and 2 on the wing frame pushing out. The armor is EVA foam and worbla. The staff is PVC pipe, worbla, and tinted plastic sheeting with a pulsing LED light hidden in the handle. This is DEFINITELY my craziest, most difficult, most expensive build! Even though the character is not well known so I haven't received a lot of love for this costume, I achieved a personal goal and feel very accomplished to have pulled it off.
